On October 3, 2023, House Republicans succeeded in ousting Republican Kevin McCarthy from the speakership, marking the first time in history that the House of Representatives has removed its leader in a vote of no confidence.

On October 17, 2023, Jim Jordan lost the first round vote for Speaker at a greater margin than Kevin McCarthy did during his 15-ballot struggle for the Speakership. He later dropped out of the running.

On October 24, 2023, Tom Emmer dropped out of the race after winning his party's nomination in a closed-door vote.

Because Republicans are the majority party in the House, it is up to House Republicans to select the next Speaker of the House.

As the Republican Party plunges into chaos, the American people are forced to wait for a new Speaker. The longer we go without a Speaker, the longer we go without someone in charge of the House to conduct business on behalf of the American People.
